10 Water Street, Suite 106

History and Mission:

In 2012, with support from the Maine Arts Commission’s Creative Communities = Economic Development Grant received by Waterville Main Street, Common Street Arts opened its doors at 16 Common Street in Waterville, Maine. The goal was to establish a non-profit collaborative arts space that included a gallery and studio teaching space. Three years later, Common Street Arts is a lively, energetic environment that serves the immediate community and beyond.

Thanks to the generous and diverse support from our members and community partners including Waterville Creates!, the Colby Museum of Art, Maine Film Center, Waterville Opera House, Colby’s Center for the Arts + Humanities, the Waterville Public Library, and others, Common Street Arts provides robust opportunities for professional and emerging artists who find the gallery a perfect space in which to exhibit their work. In the studio, students of all ages and experience levels are learning new skills, expressing their creativity, and perfecting their talents. We are proud of our signature community events, Youth Art Month and the Holiday Bazaar, each providing a showcase for local and regional artists and artisans while attracting new visitors to vibrant Common Street. With the establishment of the new arts collaborative Waterville Creates!, we are confident that Common Street Arts will be a central component of the shared vision as Waterville emerges as a primary destination for art and culture in Maine.

In 2016, Common Street Arts became an official program of Waterville Creates and moved across the street to 93 Main Street and the corner of Castonguay Square, creating greater exposure and developing a broader array of offerings.  In 2017, Common Street Arts opened its independent clay studio at 93 Main Street offering a range of classes for adults, teens, and children of all ages. In September 2018, Common Street Arts moved to its new temporary location at 10 Water Street, Suite #106 (in the Hathaway Creative Center) to make room for the new Downtown Arts Center.
